About the Park
About 1.2 million years ago, a volcanic eruption created a 14-mile-wide circular depression now known as Valles Caldera. The preserve includes extensive mountain meadows, abundant wildlife, and meandering streams. It preserves the homeland of ancestral native peoples. The area also reflects a rich ranching history.
