History and design
The square was originally part of the Darley Estate and developed alongside the surrounding residential terraces. It later served as a hockey pitch before being restored as a public garden.
During Dublin’s Millennium year in 1988, new planting and design work returned the park to a more formal Victorian layout. Its pergola was designed with details that echo the surrounding terraces.
What to do
Dartmouth Square is best enjoyed slowly. It is more suited to sitting, reading, meeting someone or taking a short walk than to sports or long-distance exercise.
