Port Chicago Naval Magazine National Memorial

On July 17, 1944, a massive explosion at Port Chicago Naval Magazine jolted the San Francisco East Bay area. Two ships loading ammunition for Pacific troops exploded, killing 320 men instantly in the worst home front disaster of World War II. The aftermath illuminated issues of segregation and racial inequality in the military. The memorial is operated by the National Park Service.
