About the Park
Trail of Tears National Historic Trail commemorates the survival of the Cherokee people after their forced removal from homelands in Georgia, Alabama, and Tennessee. The Cherokee traveled to Indian Territory, now Oklahoma, in 1838 and 1839. Travel took place by foot, horse, wagon, or steamboat. The trail is operated by the National Park Service.
