Yellowstone National Park is one of the world’s most famous protected landscapes and the first national park established in the United States. Most of the park lies in Wyoming, with smaller sections extending into Montana and Idaho. Its extraordinary mix of geysers, hot springs, wildlife, canyons, lakes and mountains makes it a destination that deserves several days.
The park is enormous, and driving between major attractions takes much longer than many first-time visitors expect.
Old Faithful is Yellowstone’s most famous geyser, but the surrounding Upper Geyser Basin contains many additional geysers, hot springs and thermal features. Boardwalks allow visitors to explore the area safely while protecting the fragile ground.
Grand Prismatic Spring is known for its intense blue center and bands of orange, yellow and green created by heat-loving microorganisms. The overlook trail provides one of the best overall views of the spring.
The Yellowstone River has carved a colorful canyon with major waterfalls and dramatic overlooks. The Upper and Lower Falls are among the park’s most impressive non-geothermal sights.
Yellowstone is one of the best wildlife-watching destinations in North America. Bison, elk, bears, wolves and other animals inhabit the park. Lamar Valley and Hayden Valley are especially well known for wildlife viewing.
Never approach wildlife. Bison can move quickly and injure visitors who get too close, while bears require additional food-storage and hiking precautions.
Yellowstone’s road system forms large loops, and distances are substantial. Wildlife jams, construction and seasonal closures can add significant travel time. Plan each day around one section of the park rather than trying to see everything at once.
Summer offers the greatest road access but also the largest crowds. Late spring and early fall are quieter, although snow can affect higher roads. Winter transforms the park and severely limits normal vehicle access.
Absolutely. Its combination of geothermal activity and large wildlife populations is unlike almost anywhere else in the world.
